Apocalypse Invasion: Survival on the Infinite Train
The child ran exceptionally fast, her speed and agility far exceeding that of an ordinary person. She was intimately familiar with the forest, leaping from tree root to tree root and occasionally bounding through the canopy.
She navigated with precision, avoiding dangerous creatures and sticking to the territories of harmless ones.
Although she took a slightly longer route, she reached her destination within half an hour.
It was a hidden tree hollow. The child squeezed through the hanging vines and whispered, "Awuh, Awuh, I'm back."
"You... *cough, cough, cough*... where did you go? It's dangerous outside, *cough, cough, cough*." A voice came from within, sounding raspy and weak.
"I brought you food." The inside of the tree hollow was not pitch black; a narrow crack on the other side allowed dim light from outside to filter in.
For people like the child and Awuh, who were accustomed to living in the forest, this sliver of light was enough to see each other clearly.
The child presented the two steamed buns in her hands like a treasure, both bearing tiny teeth marks: "I tried them, they're edible."
"This is..." Awuh propped herself up to sit. Her expression shifted as she looked at the two buns in the child's hands, which, despite being slightly squashed, still looked white and plump.
"These are buns? Where did you get them? You... *cough, cough, cough*... who did you run into?" Her anxiety only made her coughing fit worse.
The child grew worried: "Awuh, don't be angry. It was a good person, they gave them to me."
"I didn't snatch them."
"And... and I didn't steal them either."
As the child spoke, she looked quite aggrieved.
Awuh felt a mix of heartache and self-reproach. It was because she was injured and sick that the burden of providing had fallen on the child; otherwise, the child would never have risked contact with others.
