Apocalypse Invasion: Survival on the Infinite Train
Nighttime.
Although Ming Chu's was just a single room, the bed was a meter and a half wide, which was plenty of space for both her and Lin Meng to sleep.
As for Brother Wang?
He laid a makeshift bed on the floor, using a quilt he had brought from the next room.
With two extra people in the room, Ming Chu did not sleep very soundly. Half-asleep, she even had a nightmare where she accidentally fell into a horde of zombies, and they bit her to pieces, taking turns with every bite.
"Hah!"
Ming Chu snapped her eyes open and checked her phone. It was only three in the morning.
She wiped the cold sweat from her forehead and nearly screamed out loud when she abruptly caught sight of a figure by the window.
"It's me."
Brother Wang's voice sounded.
Ming Chu's body remained tensely rigid, unable to relax for a moment. She tiptoed out of bed. "Brother Wang? Aren't you sleeping?"
"Keeping watch," Brother Wang replied concisely.
Ming Chu poured herself a cup of warm water to calm her nerves, then walked over to the window as well.
Putting everything else aside, if a physique like Brother Wang's was on your side, it truly gave you a sense of security.
She lowered her voice. "Brother Wang, will someone really come to save us?"
"Miss is the boss's only daughter, and the boss loves Miss very much," Brother Wang summarized in a single sentence.
Ming Chu indicated that she understood, but some doubts lingered in her mind.
If the people sent by Lin Meng's father successfully picked them up and escorted them back without a hitch, wouldn't this side quest be far too much of a freebie?
Ming Chu did not believe the Infinite Train would be that charitable.
A faint "beep-beep" sound rang out. Ming Chu immediately followed the sound to Brother Wang's pocket and watched as he took out a satellite phone and answered it.
In the quiet night, with Ming Chu standing very close to Brother Wang, she heard almost everything coming from the device.
"...Dangerous, special circumstances, hard to break through, go to... the top of the building, there is a helicopter."
Brother Wang's face grew even colder.
If his expression before was just his habitual coldness, right now it was genuinely grim.
With a heavy stone dropping onto her heart, Ming Chu instead calmed down.
She asked Brother Wang, "Did something go wrong?"
"Yes, the zombie virus is spreading too fast, and the situation over there has also spun out of control. They can't spare enough manpower, and the situation isn't right now," Brother Wang didn't hide anything from Ming Chu. He said, "In a couple of days, we'll head to Xinghe Building. The extraction team will also go to Xinghe Building, and there's a helicopter on the roof. It'll be faster for us to fly back."
Ming Chu stated, "I have no objections. I'll listen to whatever you guys decide."
Brother Wang asked, "Can you drive?"
"Yes, but I can't guarantee how good my driving skills are," Ming Chu candidly admitted her lack of skill.
Brother Wang said, "As long as you can drive. If I need you to come out with me tomorrow, do you dare?"
Ming Chu: "...Can you tell me what we're going to do first?"
"There's a police station nearby; we're going to find some weapons," Brother Wang pulled out a map from somewhere and pointed at it as he told her, "It's a two-kilometer walk, and we'll look for a suitable vehicle along the way."
Cold sweat broke out on Ming Chu's forehead. "You mean we're walking straight there?"
"Zombies are slow right now. As long as we don't get surrounded, they can't outrun us."
Ming Chu gritted her teeth and agreed. "Fine, but I want a gun too, and you have to teach me how to shoot."
"Deal." Brother Wang managed a rare smile. "Rest assured, I won't gamble with your life. I can tell you really want Miss to stay alive. Just for that, I'll do my best to protect you."
Ming Chu's hair stood on end for a split second. Was she really that obvious?
Thank goodness Brother Wang was also dedicated to protecting Lin Meng; her little quirks could actually be turned to her advantage.
So, should she go out with Brother Wang tomorrow?
Of course—she was going!
Although she lacked combat skills, she wasn't completely helpless; the final ability of her innate talent allowed her luggage to deliver a 10-fold weight critical hit.
Even with Brother Wang's strong combat abilities, he would never guess she could conjure a suitcase out of thin air and multiply its weight by ten, right?
The water in her spatial storage alone, after a tenfold weight critical hit, could crush a person to death.
Therefore, she had no fear of Brother Wang harboring any malicious intentions.
Perhaps because she knew she would be facing zombies face-to-face tomorrow, Ming Chu slept much more soundly during the second half of the night.
The next day, Ming Chu woke up at eight. She first had a meal of instant noodles with Brother Wang and Lin Meng, which still consisted of one egg and one fried dough stick per person.
Ming Chu felt a bit troubled. She had only bought thirty eggs, which didn't seem like quite enough to eat.
Never mind, if they really had to leave anyway, they wouldn't be able to boil eggs every day.
For now, they should all nourish themselves.
Before heading out, Brother Wang gave Lin Meng endless instructions and warnings.
"Don't open the door for anyone except the two of us. If someone knocks, pretend there's no one in the room, don't react, and don't speak..."
The cold-faced tough guy instantly turned into an overprotective mother.
Ming Chu watched speechlessly as he lectured Lin Meng like a child. Lin Meng's face flushed red, and she was both embarrassed and exasperated. "Brother Wang! I'm not a kid anymore!"
Stop treating her like the eight-year-old little sister he had first met!
There was a newly acquainted friend right here, too!
The room door finally opened. Brother Wang went out first, and Ming Chu followed right behind him. Lin Meng didn't hold them back; the moment the two of them stepped out, she immediately shut the door.
The second the door closed, Ming Chu felt a little cowardly.
She closely followed behind Brother Wang, wearing her multi-functional backpack and holding another kitchen knife in her hand—yes, she had bought more than one kitchen knife.
The walls of the second-floor hallway, originally white, were now stained with blood and black filthy gore, whether caused by that young couple yesterday or splattered by Brother Wang when he came out to kill zombies.
In the silent corridor, only the footsteps of Ming Chu and Brother Wang could be heard. Within those closed rooms, not a single sound emerged, as if Ming Chu and Brother Wang were the only living people left here.
Walking to the edge of the hallway, Ming Chu finally saw the zombie's corpse.
The cute and dainty girl from yesterday had become exceptionally hideous now that she had turned into a zombie.
Ming Chu didn't dare touch the zombie, silently praying in her heart that she would be reincarnated into a good life in her next incarnation.
At least not in a zombie-infested world like this.
Sidestepping the zombie's corpse to go downstairs, Ming Chu had just rounded the corner when she spotted a zombie wandering in the first-floor lobby.
It was unmistakably the boyfriend of the zombie from earlier, and a massive wound was visible on his arm, though the flesh and blood had already turned a greenish-black.
It was a sickening and eerie color, and goosebumps broke out all over Ming Chu's body.
What she least expected, however, was that Brother Wang beside her would suddenly look at her and say, "There's only this one zombie on the first floor. You take care of it."
